What Can Disqualify You From The Navy

January 31, 2008: "The Lives of Others"

Initiatives dell'UDU (Union University of Bari), there is one, very welcome, to organize film festivals. In the last cycle of films have expected "The Lives of Others," which does not need to show and if you have one, you could use the words that his friend and colleague whispered to me FC eighty seconds after the start of the projection: "We see now that it is a beautiful film." € a head, the new Splendor is full, some guys are on the ground, I Cinzia, Lina, Francis I and II we start looking for a place, seems to be in the family: there is all the faculties. The pleasure of being at home and elsewhere to see the faces that you meet at work. "The Lives of Others" is a film about the "great benefactor", or big brother, now topical even in democracies that are emancipated for some years by socialism. In 1984, Honecker of East Germany, the state police's task is to "ensure the happiness of citizens, spiandoli shamelessly to isolate and punish those who are disobedient or smell of dissidence. Among these could be Dreymann Georg (code-named Lazlo), a playwright who, without conviction, it is aligned to the regime. The bride, beautiful, is the most quoted interpreter of his plays. A spy on the order of a poor minister who wants to fit Dreymann and take advantage of women, is the true protagonist of this story, an incorruptible cop, whose life seems to be no more than the work and service to his country. The squalor characterizes every aspect of her life as a performer: to convince the furniture hairpieces look of his house (you could see them the same in all countries of the former USSR), the white rice you eat for dinner, his dark vest, its cool looking, even the prostitute with whom he spent half an hour un'ingloriosa joy. But in this general squalor bursts suddenly a sense of justice, a thirst for freedom, the poetry of Brecht, and what was the prototype of evil becomes a heroic sacrifice. The actor who plays him unfortunately lost their lives last year, but the glory and the merit of this work have shown the film in a shower of awards, including Oscar. The fluidity of the script (not without its comic moments), the balance of narrative sequences, the skill of the actors, the faithful reconstruction of some typical environments of East Berlin (see the bar, cafeteria, apartments) that seems to lack the imagination, creativity, stimulation, this leads to an exciting result, choral and appealing. Stories over a beer at the Old South, we enjoyed the post-film. But then, once out, we could forego the cream donuts in Corso Benedetto Croce?
